Ready, Set, Bake!
Across the country aprons are being unfolded, mixing bowls dusted off, and recipe books are emerging from the cupboards. It can only mean one thing: Bake Off is back!
Yes, it's that time of year again, The Great British Bake Off has returned in full force, with 12 new bakers ready to prove that their bakes really are the best of the bunch. After two weeks of intense sporting action on our TV screens, we are ready to sit back, relax, and get our bake on. I mean, cake > sport any day, right? (Massive shout-out to the GB Olympics team by the way! What an Olympics we had!)
So in honour of Bake Off day, I thought I'd share with you some of my favourite Bake Off moments from previous series, as well as sharing the baker I'm backing this year!
Favourite Recipe-Chessboard Cake
So this recipe has featured on my blog before. And that's because I absolutely LOVE it...it looks really technical and challenging but it's actually dead easy! It makes the perfect celebration cake, or even just an everyday cake; it's fast become a family favourite in our house.
You can really make this cake your own by switching up flavours, different ganache or even a different icing all together-it's a really versatile recipe that can't go wrong, it's fool proof!
Interested? Head over to the recipe and get your bake on this sunny Wednesday!
Worst Moment
So obviously, with baking, things can and will go wrong. It's guaranteed.
I, like thousands of other bakers, have had my fair share of baking disasters. However, sometimes it's just not your fault.
And one Bake Off contestant experienced this uncontrollable misfortunate at the worst possible time. Some may know what I'm talking about...BinGate.
It was the biggest scandal in Bake Off history, and in 2014 it left many a folk heartbroken for the happy-go-lucky chap from Ireland, Iain. His ice cream had appeared to have been removed from the freezer by fellow contestant Diane. Now obviously ice cream and heat do not mix. At all. Impulsively, Iain chucked his melted mess in the bin (I mean, we all would do that, right?), and he was forced to present the very same bin to Paul and Mary at the end of the show, which resulted in him coming last and having to leave the show (scandal!)

Favourite Moment
I found it really hard to pick a best bit, it's all pretty epic. One of my favourite things about the show is Mary Berry. I mean, she is a baking Queen; royalty in the baking world. So I thought I'd share this funny video of some of her hilarious reactions to all the goings on in that wondrous tent.
Favourite Showstopper
So back in 2015, Paul (contestant Paul, not THE Paul-however, they did look quite similar weirdly enough) created this insane 'King of the Jungle' bread and it was absolutely breathtaking. Sadly for Paul, he did not win star baker that week, he was robbed of a well deserved star! Check out his bread here.
What's Next?
So as I said, tonight brings 12 brand new bakers into the iconic Bake Off tent, with 3 new challenges ready to test the skills in front of baking royalty.
And obviously, it's time to choose who I'm baking for this years Bake Off crown. Now I'm tied between two, so I'm just going to back them both (doubles the chances of one making it to the final right?)
First up is 20 year old Michael. He is currently studying at Durham Uni and conjures up all his cake creations in the middle of the night when he can finally find room in the kitchen.
Why am I backing him? First off, although he's not from the North-East, he is living here and he is the closest representative the whole of Northern England has (no pressure), so obviously that has made me back him. But I'm also so intrigued to see how his Cyprus roots can inspire his recipes, and I hope to see some culture fusions happening! To read more about Michael, check out his GBBO profile here.
My second baker is 31 year old Candice. I love how, like me, she learned to bake with her Nan, and is so obviously inspired by her in her bakes. Family is such an important factor in our lives; they shape us, support us and push us into who we are, and inspire us to dream big and never give up. It seems like Candice is going to be one to beat in this years competition, so keep your eyes peeled!
So with 30 minutes to go, pop on the kettle, grab a slice or two of cake and curl up on the sofa ready for the biggest baking competition of the year!
